“Give it a few days and see if it goes away” is often good advice — until it isn’t. Here are seven signs that what you’re dealing with needs more than rest, and a physiotherapy assessment may be the faster path back to feeling normal.
1. The Pain Has Lasted More Than Two Weeks
Minor strains typically improve within a week or two. If pain is sticking around longer than that, something else may be going on that rest alone won’t resolve.
2. It’s Limiting Your Range of Motion
Struggling to fully raise your arm, turn your neck, or bend down to tie your shoes is a sign of restricted movement that usually needs hands-on treatment and targeted exercise to resolve.
3. You Feel Numbness, Tingling, or Weakness
These sensations often point to nerve involvement, which typically doesn’t improve with rest alone and benefits from a proper assessment.
4. It Keeps Coming Back
An injury that resolves and then flares up again — after exercise, after sitting too long, after lifting something — usually has an underlying weakness or movement pattern that needs to be addressed directly.
5. You’ve Changed How You Move to Avoid Pain
Limping, favoring one side, or avoiding certain movements altogether often creates new problems elsewhere in the body over time.
6. It Followed an Accident or Injury
Whether it’s a car accident, a workplace injury, or a sports mishap, physiotherapy is often part of a proper recovery plan — and in the case of motor vehicle accidents or workplace injuries, insurance or WSIB coverage may apply.
7. It’s Affecting Your Sleep or Daily Life
If pain is waking you up at night or stopping you from doing things you normally enjoy, that’s a strong signal it’s time for a proper assessment rather than waiting it out.
